A SURVEY
OF ATTITUDE OF TEACHERS TOWARDS THE
WRITING OF LESSONNOTES IN PRIMARY
SCHOOLS
IN
ILORIN METROPOLIS
CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1:1. Background
to the study
The issue of lesson note writing is
very central to the profession of teaching. infact in any teacher training
institution both past and present ones, how to write or prepare and use lesson
notes is given much emphasis. Example of past teacher training institution are
the lower training colleges which used to prepare candidates for the grade<
iii> course, Higher training colleges which used to prepare candidate for
grade< ii> course and the post GCE ‘A’ level training which used to
prepare candidates for the grade< i > teacher course (fafunwa,1974).
Today, there are various colleges of education that are primarily
responsible with production of N.C.E graduates, the first degree (B.ed), second
degree,(M.ed) and post graduate diploma in education (PGDE) courses in addition
to the Ph.d in education in all the institutions mentioned above, especially up
to the B.ed and PGDE levels, all the students are exposed to the techniques of
writing lesson notes in a detailed manner .
As a matter of fact, a teacher is not allowed to teach unless he has
his/her lesson notes. Teaching without a lesson note is like roaming about the
bush.
Whether a student is on teaching
practice or a teacher is on full time appointment in a school, it is compulsory
for him to write a lesson note daily for each of the lesson he wants to teach.
for instance, four different topics in a day requires four lesson notes.
In every school, there are officers in charge
of reading through lesson notes and correcting them. In some schools, the
school head delegates to their immediate assistants to check such notes. Some
teachers have positive attitude towards note of the lesson writing, while other
s have negative attitude. This is what the research wishes to find out , and
make sure the negative attitude towards note of lesson writing is corrected
immediately so that at the end of the day all the teacher will have a positive
attitude towards note of lesson writing. It is hoped that the colleges of
education in the country will encourage students towards the writing of lesson
notes which eventually will enhance their teaching ability or abilities.
It is believed by some authors that the writing of lesson notes by
teachers cannot be ignored and infact the importance of lesson notes to the
teaching profession cannot be over –emphasized therefore the teachers must be
given the necessary encouragement and motivation the teaching profession can be
made a glorious profession
1.2. Statement
of the problems
A number of people have the opinion that teaching is a very difficult
job because one has the control the pupils, write several lesson note daily
write notes on the blackboard for pupils to copy, set tests and examinations
for pupils to do, mark their papers, record them and found out the people
relative performance. Out of all these, it is believed in some quarters that
lessons note writing is the most tedious.
As a result of this belief some teachers write
the notes of lesson haphazardly perfunctionly.
There are reports two by Adebayo (2000) that some teachers ‘use style’
to dodge writing the notes, while other just copy word for word from the past
lesson notes. There are other teachers who believe that it is only during the
teaching practice that detailed notes of lesson notes- which is wrong. There
are also some teachers, who write lesson notes on some core subjects but refuse
to write on some other subjects. Another notice problem is very poor mastery of
English language. The lesson note of some teachers are infested by many
spelling and grammatical errors. Worst still, such poor teacher’s exhibit
resentment towards their super ordinate that correct such errors and leave them
there? As a result of the problem identified above, this study is going to
identify teacher’s attitude towards lesson note writing in primary schools in
